During the school holidays, the Vox POP newsroom changes scenery. The young journalists are scattered, sometimes several hundred kilometres apart — but the newspaper goes on.
For the first time, they are producing two issues remotely, from their different holiday locations. Journeys, encounters, discoveries and shared moments all become material for reporting. Two issues, two stages of the same summer adventure.
A newsroom that stays on course
The two Summer Special issues were produced almost in parallel, remotely and during the school holidays.
After the publication of the first part, the team had to keep up the pace: continue working on articles, gather texts and images, proofread, make corrections and prepare a second edition.
And meanwhile, the holidays continued.
The schedules of our young journalists should not be overlooked. Family trips, activities, returning from holidays and, gradually, preparations for the new school year: Vox POP had to find its place among all of this.
Yet the team stayed on course until the very end.
This second issue therefore becomes the true culmination of the Summer Special. Not only because it completes four pages of holiday stories, but because it shows that a newsroom made up of 10- to 15-year-olds was able to sustain a shared objective over time, despite very different schedules and availability.
A big thank you also to the families and loved ones who supported our young journalists throughout this adventure and certainly had to make a few compromises themselves to make all of this possible. Thank you all!
Donovan – Looking beyond the clichés
Rimini could easily be reduced to the image of a seaside resort overrun by crowds of tourists. Donovan takes almost the opposite approach.
Beaches, of course, but also sport, cycling, history, cinema, shopping and family activities: little by little, he paints the picture of a lively city full of surprises and possibilities.
He does not try to deny Rimini's tourist identity. He simply shows that it is not enough to define the city.
His unabashed enthusiasm – right down to the “absolutely MAGNIFICENT!” water – gives the article its energy. By addressing families, history lovers, cyclists, film enthusiasts and runners in turn, he allows everyone to find their own Rimini.
In a short sidebar, Donovan ends his holidays at the Locarno Film Festival. Movie&Media Labs, professional equipment, green screen and meetings with filmmakers: a few lines are enough to tell a very different story and end his summer on another note.

From the article to producing the newspaper!
His visit to the Locarno Film Festival also reveals Donovan’s interest in technology, images and communication tools. At the Movie&Media Labs, he experiments with professional equipment, green screen and the production of a tutorial.
It is no coincidence that Donovan also handled a large part of the layout for both Holiday Special editions. As production editor, he put once again his personal interests at the service of the team with remarkable independence and determination.
Esther – When the holidays stay at home
Esther chooses a tree in her garden and a family tradition: every summer, for around two weeks, the whole family gets involved in harvesting Cornelian cherries.
Nets under the tree, half a day's work to fill three large bowls, followed by jelly, syrup, lemonade, ice cream, sorbet and compote.
We can picture the tree, the nets, the bowls gradually filling and the whole family gathered around. The film unfolds in our minds.
Behind these small red fruits, something much bigger appears: a tradition, work shared as a family and the reward that comes after the effort.
Esther shows that a holiday story does not depend on how far you travel. A beautiful story can begin at the bottom of your own garden.
Flavours Corner
Cornelian Cherry Jelly, Esther & Co. Style
Cornelian cherries make a delicious homemade jelly — provided you have a Cornelian cherry tree in the garden ;)
Warning! This jelly isn’t easy!
Ingredients

1 litre of Cornelian cherry juice

800 g sugar
-
Juice of 1 lemon
Preparation

Pour the Cornelian cherry juice and sugar into a large saucepan.

Bring to the boil and keep boiling until the jelly has “set”. Meanwhile, stir and skim regularly. (This step often takes longer than with other jams.)

Add the lemon juice and stir for a few moments.

Pour into previously sterilised jars and leave to set.
Célia – Making us feel the journey
With Célia, Turkey is not only visited: it is felt. There are the ancient stones of Hierapolis, its vast theatre, the Gate of Domitian, the large lizards encountered among the ruins, and then the natural terraces of Pamukkale.
But it is above all the sensations that give the story its strength.
The heat is “overwhelming”. There is climbing to do. Everyone gets dehydrated. The stones radiate heat. Then, after the effort, comes the refreshing water of the pools.
And finally the reward: the late-afternoon light, the sun reflecting on the water and the travertine terraces that simply left her in awe.
Célia does not merely tell us what she saw. She gradually draws us into the atmosphere of her journey.
A journey into the past, told through vivid sensations, that makes you want to add it to the list for a future trip.
Ruins inhabited by history… but not only
Workshops and more
At Hierapolis, Célia takes us through the remains of a Greco-Roman city: the theatre, Cleopatra’s Pool, the tomb of Saint Philip and the Gate of Domitian.
But among all these traces of the past, she also notices some very living inhabitants: large lizards, much bigger than the ones she knows in Switzerland, hiding between the stones. An almost insignificant detail, yet one that immediately brings the story to life.
Célia does more than describe a historical site: she observes her surroundings, creates a living setting and restores the journey’s sense of exploration, encounters and unexpected discoveries.
Jules – The journey also goes through the stomach
For his trip to Portugal, Jules chooses three restaurants and turns himself into a food critic. But he also begins by setting the scene: beach, sunset, a terrace almost with your feet in the sand … a picture-perfect setting.
There is no solemn guidebook tone here: staff laughing in the kitchen, a “looong” wait, a deep-sea fish with an “ugly face”, a frontage that could have done with a good clean … Jules notices everything.
A discerning foodie, critical but forgiving, he knows how to point out what did not quite work without losing sight of what matters most: the pleasure of discovering, tasting and sharing.
Reading him, you can almost see him savouring the dishes as much as the storytelling: honey-glazed prawns, monkfish, cataplana … and, of course, octopus.
Yes, the famous octopus is back. And this time, it is on Jules' plate. The circle is complete. And Jules apparently loves it.

The two issues, finally together
Produced almost in parallel, remotely and during the holidays, the two parts of the Summer Special are brought together here for the first time.
This image marks the completion of a collective challenge: staying on course all the way to the second issue, despite the holidays and the approaching school year.
What we observe
This second part of the Summer Special offers several interesting observations.
The first concerns the writing itself.
The young journalists are beginning to develop very personal ways of telling stories.
Donovan takes a familiar destination and reveals its diversity. Esther turns a family tradition into a story. Célia builds her journey around sensations. Jules makes his humour and personal perspective the driving forces behind his food reviews.
The subject matters. But the perspective of the person telling the story matters just as much.
Issue after issue, individual voices are beginning to emerge.
The second observation concerns how the group works.
Producing one issue is one thing. Producing a second almost simultaneously, during the holidays and as the new school year approaches, is quite another.
No. 4 shows that the newsroom is increasingly able to maintain a shared objective despite individual constraints. Not everyone has the same schedule. Not everyone works at the same time. Yet the contributions eventually come together and allow the newspaper to exist.
That, too, is part of learning how to work together. Once again, a great demonstration of teamwork.
This applies both to the journalists on the ground and to the editorial team at the helm: writing articles and taking photos, gathering contributions, proofreading, layout, corrections … In short: BRAVO to everyone!

The collaboration with Le Courrier Lavaux-Oron-Jorat
Vox Pop is published once a month as an insert in Le Courrier Lavaux-Oron-Jorat, the district’s newspaper for the past 76 years.
This collaboration anchors the project in a concrete editorial reality: the young people know that they will be read, which creates — according to Thomas Zoller — “an additional positive tension.”
