N°1 - Vox POP

Learning journalism by producing a real newspaper published in the regional press

On 21 May 2026, the first issue of Vox Pop was published in the pages of the Courrier Lavaux-Oron-Jorat, marking the completion of a first phase of work for the editorial team of young journalists aged 10 to 14.

A first publication

This edition brings together several pieces produced as part of the project, reflecting the diversity of the topics addressed and the pupils’ progress in writing, reporting and shaping their content.

It represents a first step in the public validation of the work carried out during the workshops, now presented to a real regional readership.

Topics chosen by our editorial team

Readers will discover, among other things, a report on the Club de lutte suisse de la Haute-Broye, produced in the field during a championship bringing together nearly 260 Swiss wrestlers. The article combines observation, interviews, historical context and photographic reporting.

The newspaper also features a social commentary piece on the gradual disappearance of certain older homes in favour of new apartment buildings, a reflection that shows the young people’s interest in the evolution of their own environment.

Local news is also present through an interview with the Croc’Bio grocery store in Puidoux, as well as a meeting with the team at the Brunchy bakery in Oron-la-Ville. These topics illustrate the editorial team’s attachment to the economic and social life of the region.

Finally, creativity also has its place in these pages with the publication of the first chapter of Jules’ novel, showing that journalistic writing can coexist with literary writing.

Learning journalism by practising it

Each published article is the result of a genuine editorial process: researching information, making contact, conducting interviews, writing, photography, proofreading and layout.

The young journalists thus discover the importance of verifying information, meeting deadlines, collaborating and taking editorial responsibility. They also learn to receive constructive criticism and to improve their work from one edition to the next.

This hands-on approach is one of the project’s strengths: understanding the media by producing them.

A key moment in the development of the project

The direct involvement of Arvid Ellefsplass, Editor-in-Chief of Le Courrier Lavaux-Oron-Jorat, with the entire newsroom marked an important milestone for the project.

This exchange helped anchor the newspaper in its local community while defining its editorial tone from the very beginning.

The outcome of this meeting impressed Arvid Ellefsplass so much that, in his editorial published on 21 May 2026 in Le Courrier Lavaux-Oron-Jorat, he described the experience as "stunning."

The mutual portrait — a meaningful way to discover one another

At the same time, the Kernel Media Project methodology includes mutual portraits between members of the editorial team. Each young person is invited to interview another member and then write a portrait, which is enriched or completed through a reciprocal perspective.

This exercise develops listening skills, reformulation and attention to others, while strengthening the collective dynamic. It also makes the editorial team itself visible as a journalistic subject.

From production to distribution

After the writing, proofreading and layout phases, the content was integrated into the newspaper with the support of the Courrier Lavaux-Oron-Jorat team. This step made it possible to complete the transition from the workshop to professional publication.

Analysis of the journalistic productions

As part of Vox Pop, each article is analysed afterwards. This approach allows the young journalists to look back at their own work in order to identify the editorial choices they made, the difficulties they encountered and the lessons they learned.

The analysis focuses on the construction of the topic, the quality of the sources, the structure of the narrative and any possible gap between the initial intention and the final result. It is a central tool for progress, encouraging reflection and the development of a critical perspective on journalistic work.

What comes next?

At the time of this first publication, the second issue was already in preparation, with the ambition of developing even richer content and firmly establishing the editorial dynamic over the long term.

And finally: the finished prouct

"The Birth of an Editorial Team"

Vox Pop in the spotlight on the front page of Le Courrier

To mark the first publication of Vox Pop, Le Courrier Lavaux-Oron-Jorat dedicated its main front-page photograph to the project, as well as the editorial by its editor-in-chief, Arvid Ellefsplass, entitled “Bluffant!”, praising this first edition.

Vernissage and project gathering

Following this publication, a vernissage brought together the families of the young journalists, the team of Le Courrier Lavaux-Oron-Jorat, as well as Sonia Biétry and Thomas Zoller, the initiators of the project.

This moment made it possible to share the work accomplished and to symbolically mark the newspaper’s first public appearance.

A symbolic recognition

In the days that followed, each young journalist received a symbolic press card.

This gesture marks their official integration into the Vox POP editorial team and recognises their active role in the project.

Welcome to the Vox POP family!

The collaboration with Le Courrier Lavaux-Oron-Jorat

Vox Pop is published once a month as an insert in Le Courrier Lavaux-Oron-Jorat, the district’s newspaper for the past 76 years.

This collaboration anchors the project in a concrete editorial reality: the young people know that they will be read, which creates — according to Thomas Zoller — “an additional positive tension.”
