For the promotion of media literacy

The Kernel Media Project

A Swiss non-profit association based in Lausanne, opening newsrooms to a new

generation of contributors.

Why Kernel Media Project?

In a world saturated with images, content and information, understanding the media can no longer be limited to analysing them from the outside.

Kernel Media Project invites young people to understand media from the inside by taking part in real editorial projects alongside professionals. The aim is not only to learn how to write an article. It is to create a framework in which everyone can observe, choose, cooperate, verify, publish and find their place in a collective production.

A story rooted in practice

Kernel Media Project has its roots in school newspaper workshops carried out at HEP Vaud, and later in the development of MagTuner.

In 2014, a workshop and the MagTuner prototype were presented at HEP Vaud during the conference “Creativity and learning: a tandem to be reinvented?”.

Since then, this experience has continued through projects carried out with schools, media organisations, institutions and youth newsrooms.

An urgent issue

Young people are growing up in a continuous flow of images, opinions and content.

Kernel Media Project invites them to enter the making of information in order to better understand what they watch, read and share.

A field-based association

Connecting media, schools, institutions, associations and local actors around concrete projects.

Each project is built within a context, with a public and with partners. This field-based approach makes it possible to create useful, visible projects rooted in reality.

Our mission

Strengthening the desire to understand and practise active media analysis.

We want to create spaces where young people’s perspectives, questions and voices are taken seriously. The newspaper becomes a concrete framework.

« The Editorial Factory »
a place open to all

Kernel Media Project has access to a space intended to gradually host the Fabrique édito: a place for work, meetings and production around concrete editorial projects.

Open to young people, media organisations, schools, institutions, associations and professionals, the Fabrique édito will make it possible to develop a network of skills in service of young people and local information.

From the field to a transmissible model

Kernel Media Project documents concrete experiences, observes what works, adjusts formats and gradually builds a framework capable of being adapted to different local contexts.

Designed to circulate between media organisations, schools, institutions and associations, this model creates bridges between regions, languages, generations, professions and audiences.

It aims to foster a transversal, intergenerational and transregional dynamic in service of media literacy and local, collaborative and responsible information.

« Helping people grow through trust »

Kernel Media Project is led by Thomas Zoller, a journalist, photographer and trainer based in Lausanne.

After several years in the written press in French-speaking Switzerland, he developed school newspaper workshops, taught photography and visual communication, and later designed MagTuner, a tool intended to make newspaper creation with young people easier.

This experience, at the crossroads of journalism, pedagogy and editorial production, is now one of the foundations of Kernel Media Project.
